Moxie Deserved More Than 30 Hours
Some stories stay with you forever. Moxie was one of them.
A tiny black and white kitten, she was found lying on hot pavement after several days of triple digit temperatures. She was barely alive. Thankfully, one compassionate person stopped, picked her up, and rushed her to Fabled Farm so we could get her emergency veterinary care.
The Intake
She arrived in critical condition with pneumonia, severe anemia from an overwhelming flea infestation, dehydration, and extreme malnutrition. Her tiny body had endured far more than any kitten ever should.
We named her Moxie because it means courage, determination, and fighting spirit.
The Fight
For 30 hours, she wasn't just another forgotten kitten. She had a name. She was held, loved, and surrounded by people who wanted so badly for her story to have a different ending.
Despite every effort from our veterinary team and ours, Moxie passed away.
The Reality
As heartbreaking as her loss is, her story is not unique. Every spring and summer, rescues are flooded with kittens born outside to unspayed community cats. Some are found early enough to save. Many aren't.
By the time they arrive, they're often dehydrated, dangerously underweight, covered in fleas, fighting infections, and hanging onto life by a thread.
People often see the happy adoption photos. What they don't see are the emergency vet visits, the medications, the sleepless nights, the bottle feedings, the constant monitoring, and the heartbreak that comes when, despite doing everything possible, it still isn't enough.
Every critically ill kitten requires an enormous investment of time, medical care, and financial resources. Emergency care alone can cost hundreds of dollars before a kitten is even stable. Yet every rescue makes the same decision: we try.
Not because the outcome is guaranteed, but because every life deserves that chance.
Spay / Neuter
The truth is, rescue cannot solve this problem alone.
The most effective way to save kittens is before they are ever born into suffering. Spaying and neutering prevents unwanted litters, reduces the number of kittens struggling to survive outdoors, and keeps rescues from facing impossible situations like Moxie's every single day.
We wish Moxie had more than 30 hours.
But during those 30 hours, she knew warmth. She knew safety. She knew love.
While we couldn't change the beginning of her story, we hope her story changes the future for others.
